You’ll need to get a move on if you want to enter this year’s women’s 10k race AND save yourself some cash in the process.

The early bird discount period for entry to the 2010 Ignis Asset Manageme nt Women’s 10k runs out tomorrow – so don’t delay!

This year’s event, of which the Evening Times is media partner, is already on course to be a record breaker, with 6,800 women having signed up so far.

That’s 1,100 up on this time last year, and organisers Culture and Sport Glasgow are expecting a huge surge of entries this week.

Clyde 1 DJ Suzie McGuire helped to ‘jog’ people’s memories about the fast-approaching early bird closing date at an outdoor training session at the iconic ‘Running Legs’ clock outside Buchanan Bus Station.

The clock was commissioned by Radio Clyde to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 1999 and is a familiar sight for regular travellers.

Suzie, who is keeping a training diary for us as she prepares to take part in her first ever women’s 10k, joined Face of the Race winners Natalie Foy, Angela McQueen, Pippa Gardner and Kirsty Allan to launch the last-minute early bird discount.

Councillor Anne McTaggart, spokeswoman for Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: “The Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k has already attracted thousands of entrants, from elite athletes to first-time runners, confirming its place as one of the city’s leading events.

“With the big race less than two months away there is still time to pull on your trainers and take part. But the clock is ticking for those hoping to take advantage of the ‘Early Bird’ offer which closes on Friday.”

You can enter online at www.runglasgow.org. The website also provides information on charities, beginner, intermediate and advanced training plans and training podcasts and information on Glasgow’s Running Network.

It costs £20 to enter online before March 19 – after that, it goes up to £24. Postal entries cost £22 before March 19 and £27 afterwards.

The Glasgow Running Network’s annual 5k fun run – which is open to men and women – takes place on March 28 in Bellahouston Park. Entry costs from £9 – for more details call 0141 287 5079 or visit www.runglasgow.org

RUN FOR FUN – AND RAISE CASH FOR THE BEATSON PEBBLE APPEAL

Glasgow University’s fourth annual Run for Fun event takes place this Saturday, March 20, at Garscube Sports Complex on Maryhill Road.

This year, the Beatson Pebble Appeal, which is backed by the Evening Times, will benefit from the sponsorship cash raised.

The appeal aims to raise £10 million to help build a translational research centre in Glasgow, which will help to turn scientific discoveries into treatments for cancer patients.

The Run for Fun has already raised more than £10,000 for good causes, including Yorkhill Hospital, and entries have increased from 50 in the first year to more than 200 in 2009.

Organisers are hoping for even more this year.

If you want to take part, you can download an entry form and check out the route at www.gla.ac.uk/sport

SUZIE McGUIRE’S TRAINING DIARY

Clyde 1 DJ Suzie McGuire is training for her first ever women’s 10k. This week, she reluctantly decides to step things up a gear – and makes a good investment...

Adam, my friendly but tough personal trainer, thinks it’s time I took my training routine to the next level.

I’ve been doing a lot of cardio work and weights, but he wants me to concentrate purely on running this week – and not just on the treadmill.

Fresh air is best! I do agree, although it’s a bit tricky when I have my two little girls at home, so I’m going to have to do a bit of juggling.

I’ve got two-hour training sessions every morning this week, and I’m dreading it. But I need to just go for it.

I decided one way of motivating myself would be to set myself a personal goal – nothing too major, but just to have something to work towards.

So I’ve decided I want to try to finish the race around the hour mark. That should keep me sticking to plan.

I’ve also decided to invest in a decent sports bra. Apart from good trainers, that’s really the only other piece of kit you need to do the women’s 10k.

And being a bigger girl on the bust front, I always feel a bit self-conscious when I’m out running, so this should help to keep things under control!

I will let you know how I get on next time...
