I was surprised to hear no trace of a Welsh accent when Cardiff-born Andy Fairweather Low, founder member of 1960s international hit-makers Amen Corner, joined us on Smooth Drive Time ahead of his gig at the Royal Concert Hall with ex-Dr Hook frontman Dennis Locorriere.

Long after hits like Bend Me, Shape Me and chart topper If Paradise Is Half As Nice had faded away, the acclaimed lead vocalist and guitarist went on to make his mark in the mid-1970s with the haunting ballad Wide Eyed And Legless.

Andy peaked at number six with that – a respectable success bearing in mind he was competing with Abba’s Mamma Mia and the Queen classic number one Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975.

I asked how the band name Amen Corner came about. “Someone said ‘Ah-Men Corner’ and we said no. Then I said ‘Amen Corner’ and I liked it – and I still like it as a band name,” said Andy.
