It would be wrong to suggest that anyone at Holyrood is taking any pleasure from the predicament Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell finds himself in, but there is some relief in SNP ranks that they’re almost out of the spotlight of bad publicity for the first time in weeks.

Auctioning off lunches at Holyrood with Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon, and her handling of the self-inflicted controversy over writing a letter in support of a convicted fraudster, are already fading memories.

These events have been overshadowed by the drama surrounding Mr Purcell.

Tributes to him were sincere but not glowing.
