RUN PICTURE GALLERY: That's the spirit!

by Russell Leadbetter

AS usual, it was the professional athletes who crossed the finishing line first. The Kenyans and the Japanese made it all look so easy.

But, as usual, it was the thousands of runners who came in behind them who caught the eye - and captured the spirit of the 26th freshnlo Great Scottish Run.

As happens every year, there were weekend runners, serious amateur runners, fun-runners and charity runners.

There were wheelchair athletes, there were people in Jimmy wigs, skeleton costumes and gladiator costumes. Some people clutched collecting buckets as they ran so they could continue raising money for the causes closest to their heart.

At one point, a group of 10 outsize ostriches sprinted past.

It's not something you would expect to see on the streets of Glasgow every day - but, this being the Great Scottish Run, it was perfectly understandable.

In both the half-marathon and the 10K, hundreds of women and men wore specially decorated bras in aid of breast cancer research Walk the Walk.

Other people were taking part in memory of friends or relatives who had died, often after lengthy battles against illness.

If the Sunday was bright with colour and spectacle, it was the same on the Saturday, when huge numbers of kids took to the streets for the Junior 3K run.

The kids were the real stars of the weekend.

The pictures in this special gallery reflect one of the many upbeat sides of Glasgow; thousands of strangers running together to raise money for charity, to get fit, to experience at first-hand Scotland's largest mass-participation event.

And many, if not all, are already eagerly looking forward to the 2008 event.
