STYLE: Girls on film

by Maureen Ellis

WOMEN across the world are bracing themselves for the summer blockbuster they've waited four long years to watch - the final chapter in the lives of Manhattan's most fabulous foursome.

You can bet the success of the film will be judged on the performance of one woman...and that ain't Sarah Jessica Parker.

After styling six glorious TV series between 1999 and 2004 costume designer Patricia Field is back at her inventive best for the big-screen version. She devised no less than 81 outfits for the queen of eccentric bohemianism, Carrie Bradshaw, picking and choosing eclectic garments from Dior, Balenciaga, Lacroix and Prada alongside vintage stores without the couture pricetag.

Parker is reunited with Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis; each of her character's distinctive styles continue as before, with Samantha's brutal power dressing, Miranda's no-nonsense edginess and Charlotte's Park Avenue princess.

The heels are higher, the colour palette brighter and the faces smoother than ever in the £30million blockbuster, which opens on May 28.

There's the return of old wardrobe favourites - the oversized corsages, totes so big you could camp out in them, and shoes with an exclamation mark.

The world's most fabulous singleton is preparing to tie the knot with her Mr Big (Chris Noth) so we know there's a wedding dress - a divine Vivienne Westwood princess gown customised Carrie-style with a peacock plume headdress and Dior gladiator shoes - but is there an "I do"?

Expect 135 minutes of fashion eye candy, that's sure to do for over-the-knee socks, shoe boots and gladiator sandals what the original series did for corsages, Choos and Cosmopolitans.

Field has said: "I just want to make this look gorgeous." And she's done it, with bells on.
