TELEVISION bosses spend inordinate amounts of time and money trying to work out which acting partnership would be small-screen gold and would hook millions of viewers - and advertisers.

They need worry no longer - the answer, clearly, is David Tennant and Anna Friel.

David and Anna topped the male and female lists as viewers named their sexiest TV leads.

Paisley-born David, who stars as Doctor Who, was a clear winner in the poll, carried out for digital channel Hallmark.

Also in the top 10 of leading men, if well behind the dashing David, were such names as House star Hugh Laurie and James Corden, who plays Smithy in the BAFTA-winning Gavin and Stacey.

The poll found that charisma was slightly more important than good looks for a leading man. A refusal to play by the rules' was also rated highly by voters.

But when it came to women, good looks were by far the quality that most people demanded.

Ex-Brookside star Anna, who is currently starring in the hit US drama Pushing Daisies, finished ahead of Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria, Lost star Evangeline Lily, Heroes pin-up Hayden Panettiere, Bionic Woman Michelle Ryan, Ashes to Ashes copper Keeley Hawes and Courtney Cox, once of Friends and now starring in Dirt.

A spokesman for Hallmark summed up the poll by saying: "A sexy male or female lead can make a real difference to the success of a new TV series.

"If you were creating the ideal on-screen TV couple, it would ideally be David and Anna - but you wouldn't want to see them doing anything that distracts from the plot."
