MUST-SEE MOVIES

  • Kung Fu Panda (PG), out this Friday, is the animation movie starring Po (Jack Black) as a lazy Panda dreaming of becoming a member of the Furious Five, a group who protect the city from crime. When the existence of the city is threatened Po is the chosen one to fight for the city's survival. Also includes the voices of Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Jackie Chan.

  • Based on the classic novel by Jules Verne, Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D (PG) stars Brendon Fraser as a scientist who believes that the hidden world in the novel is real and begins an expedition with his nephew to find it. Filmed in 3D, so hopefully the kids will be at the edge of their seats throughout the film.

    Release Date: July 11

  • Wall-E (U) is the latest film released by Toy Story and Monsters Inc. creators Pixar and focuses on a lonely cleaning robot, Wall-E, who finds himself alone on Earth after humans escape to find somewhere more hospitable. He stumbles across another robot, however, and Wall-E's purpose in life will never be the same again.

    Release Date: July 18.

    DVD HEAVEN

  • Fancy something a bit different that will be ideal for those rainy days? Then Bee Movie (U) is the one to buy, as it's visually impressive and totally hilarious. The movie takes you on a journey with the leading character Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) who decides to sue mankind after discovering that humans eat all their honey.

  • In The Spiderwick Chronicles (PG), Jared and Simon Grace move to Spiderwick Estate where they discover a whole new world filled with fairies and other creatures. After several unexplained disappearances the family begins to suspect the two boys. It's exciting, off-the-wall stuff that gives the kids a chance to let their imagination take over - and hopefully give you some peace.

  • From the makers of Toy Story, Cars and Monsters Inc. Ratatouille (U) is another gem from the Disney Pixar Studios. This animated box office blockbuster takes you on an adventure with Remy, a rat living in the French countryside, who arrives in Paris to pursue his dream of becoming a top chef. After forming an alliance with a young garbage boy Remy becomes a chef - with hilarious consequences.

  • Paddington Bear: Here and Now (HarperCollins, £5.99) is the new illustrated story from Michael Bond, which sees kids' favourite Paddington set off on another adventure. This time, he must decide where his real home is - with the Brown family in London or back in his native land of darkest Peru?

  • In Superior Saturday (HarperCollins, £5.99) - the sixth part of his teenage fantasy series - Garth Nix continues his gripping mix of kingdoms, sorcerers and all things magical. One to get your teeth into from the best-selling author.

  • First Aid for Fairies by Lari Don (Floris Books, £5.99) is a magical adventure story set in Scotland. Aimed at boys and girls, aged eight to 12-years-old, it whisks the reader from the Borders to Orkney and tells the story of the dark legends behind the fabled beasts in the story. Lari will appear at a free event on July 12 at 2.30pm to 3.30pm in Borders Bookshop on Buchanan Street where she will tell some fantastic tales.

    GARDEN GAMES

  • A game of skill and patience, Blockbuster (£29.99) builds on a popular game format and magnifies it to an unprecedented scale. Taking influence from the Jenga game, this outdoor game stands at over three feet tall and contains over 60 blocks. A pain to rebuild but it never fails to excite. An excellent idea for outdoor parties too.

  • Super Swingball (£17.99) is a classic that will never go out of fashion - it truly is a staple part of the summer fun. An updated version of the kids' favourite, this is sure to keep people of all ages amused in the garden. Contains two bats and is made of weather res-istant parts for drizzly days.

  • Fun, traditional and easy to play - the Giant Board Games (£9.99) are extra-large durable vinyl boards. Complete with giant playing pieces and dice, they are ideal for outdoor play.

    Includes ludo, snakes and ladders and chinese checkers. Cost effective, fun and easy to keep clean.

    TOYS

  • Current toy craze Zeebeez (from £2.99) are small devices which leap into the air and bounce when you flip, twist or drop one of them on to a hard surface. They can jump up to 6ft in the air and there four different ones to collect.

  • GoGos Crazy Bones (from 99p per packet) are small colourful characters. The objective of the game is to, with a friend, guess the identity of each char-acter by feeling the play-piece. Whoever guesses 10 characters correctly wins.

  • The Bratz brand maintains its popularity with fashion dolls (from £3.99) which allow girls to experiment with dress, style and hair.

    COMPUTER GAMES

  • The Incredible Hulk (PS2, £34.99, available on other consoles). This game is an adaptation of the recent Hulk movie featuring Edward Norton as the green beast. The game takes you through the action in the film and lets you play Bruce Banner, also known as the Incredible Hulk.

  • Lego: Indiana Jones (XBOX 360, £39.99, available on other consoles). A Lego version of the blockbuster film recently released, this tongue-in-cheek representation of Harrison Ford and Co. sees you control Dr Jones through the typical perils he encounters.

  • Super Smash Brothers: Brawl (Nintendo Wii, £34.99).

    The third instalment of the series sees the Smash Brothers debut on the Wii. With an all-star cast, including the likes of Mario, Sonic and Donkey Kong, this bubbly fighting game is set to see its popularity soar even higher.

    ZEST

    Culture and Sport Glasgow are overseeing numerous footballing events for kids all over the city. Children aged from five to 18 are catered for and many sessions begin this week.

    The schemes are all part of the department's Zest programme, which includes activities from arts to adventure sports. There are different programmes for the north, south-east, east, west and south-west of the city.

    Programmes include coaching, five-a-sides, tournaments and fun football, and are separated into under nines, nine to 11, and over 12s.

    Meanwhile, extra training for girls aged 11-18 interested in plying their trade for woman's teams in Glasgow has been scheduled.

    BROOMHILL SUMMER CAMP

    Running until August at Hyndland Secondary, Broomhill Community Sports Club has responded to demand by hosting a summer camp which offers children aged five to 14 the chance to enjoy a variety of sporting activities including football, basketball and dance exercise.

    Youngsters will be under the supervision and guidance of experienced staff and camps can be booked for both full-day and half-day weeks. Places are limited to 50 children a week and prices start from just £40 for a half-day week, with members benefiting from special discounts.

    SCOTTISH FA/EAST RENFREWSHIRE FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

    East Renfrewshire Council has teamed up with the Scottish Football Association to offer children six weeks of football camps throughout July and August.

    Held at a variety of locations - Eaglesham playing fields, Pro-Soccer Giffnock, Mactaggart and Mickel Millennium Astro, Barrhead Sports Centre, Woodfarm High School, Woodfarm synthetic and Overlee playing fields - the football development scheme offers opportunities for children aged three to 14 and prices start from just £4.20 per 90-minute session. Bonuses include a gift for every pre-booked course member and an SFA certificate of attendance.

    BALJAFFRAY SUMMER CAMP

    This new addition to Glasgow's summer football programme will run from the July 10-14 at Auchenhowie Sports Club, Milngavie, and is open to primary five, six and seven pupils.

    Open to non-members, the camp can accommodate 50 children but priority will be given to members and their families. The camp is designed to offer kids a variety of fun activities from 10am to 4pm, with the full-day week costing £70 for members or £96 for non-members.

    RANGERS RESIDENTIAL CAMPS

    For a completely different football experience, kids can immerse themselves in the beautiful game by participating in one of the Rangers residential camps at Garscube Campus at Glasgow University.

    For £375 for the week-long camp - with one running at the beginning of July and another at the start of August - children can eat, drink and sleep football as they enjoy a fun-packed week of training and playing with Rangers Youth Team, and even have the chance to be scouted! There are also two-day roadshows, open to boys and girls aged between seven and 16, which are travelling around Scotland.

    With community coaching dates available throughout the summer, Celtic are offering training for kids at various locations around Glasgow. Starting from July 7, there are a number of four-day camps, with prices starting from £36 a day.

    QUEEN'S PARK SUMMER COURSES

    Scotland's oldest senior club will be staging coaching courses for kids aged between four and 16 starting on Monday, August 4, at Lesser Hampden.

    HAMILTON CHILDREN'S PROGRAMME

    Hamilton Accies are offering two summer schools at the Bent Recreation Pitches in Hamilton for boys and girls aged four to 14.

    The first session is from July 14-18, while the second block kicks off on July 28. They run from 10am to noon and cost £30 for the week. Discounts are available for those going to both weeks and families who send two kids to one week.
