HOLLYWOOD legend Mae West quite literally stopped the traffic when she arrived in Glasgow in 1947 to produce her self-penned play Diamond Lil at the city's Alhambra Theatre.

Film-mad Glaswegians mobbed the star and her companion, the former world welterweight champion boxer Kid Lewis, left, as they stepped off the London train to head for their accommodation in the Central Hotel.

West, who revelled in her risque public persona, was a huge hit with Glasgow theatregoers who couldn't get enough of her racy patter. After all, it wasn't everyday a Hollywood star came to the city.
