PALE and interesting is back in vogue. With Hollywood stars like Anne Hathaway and Cate Blanchett, left, working the red carpets with porcelain skin, the days of the uber tan are well and truly numbered.
As for lobster red skin, that's always been a definite style no-no. But despite the risks and the fashion faux pas, two thirds of us will get sunburned at some point during the summer in the UK, according to Dove research.
When the sun's blazing, we're all guilty of stepping out to soak up the rays with insufficient protection now and again.
The dreaded burn factor tends to happen when we least expect it - a fifth of women get sunburned doing everyday tasks like shopping when sunscreen is put on the back burner, reveals Dove.
So be super-savvy with your sun protection this summer, whether you crave a subtle sun-kissed glow, deep bronze tan, or simply want to stay pale. Our experts reveal how to protect your face, body and hair when the sun is shining by answering some key skincare questions:
Is a moisturiser or foundation with SPF enough sun protection during the summer months?
"Yes, but not for sunbathing," advises make-up artist Jemma Kidd.
"As SPF only indicates protection against UVB, look for cover against damaging UVB rays too. Foundation should be applied sparingly, so never rely on it for protection. In summer I use an oil-free, tinted moisturiser with SPF moisturiser or primer applied first.
"If your moisturiser doesn't have SPF apply an oil-free, matte sunscreen on top, or try an SPF primer."

How much suntan lotion should I appply to my body - is once really enough?
"Conventional products tend to wear off and people tend to be a bit sparing with the first application when they know that they need to keep re-applying it," says Mike Brown, Boots Suncare scientific adviser.
"We recommend conventional products are re-applied every one to two hours to replace any product that has been rubbed away, but also to build up the sunscreen layer to the recommended amount. Use a blob about the size of a £2 coin for an area equivalent to the whole of one arm from shoulders to fingertips.
"Extended wear products are different," Mike adds. "They stay on the skin much better and so the risk of the product wearing off is much less."

Is it important to protect your hair in the same way you protect your body?
"Yes, there are hair products that contain SPFs to protect against the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun," says Charlie Taylor, hairdresser and Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Doctor.
"Before you head out in the sun, simply spritz the protector over your hair and comb through.
"Non-greasy hair oil enhanced with SPF will also help to promote shine and condition - smooth through for a sleek look," Charlie recommends.
