THESE five guys might have been clowning about for the camera but in reality they were about to embark on the biggest adventure of their young lives.

John Heggarty, inside the lifebelt, Andrew Bone, Raymond Jack, Eddie Fullarton, Leckie MacLean and John Cutherbertson were about to set sail from the Broomielaw to begin new lives in Australia.

Emigrating under the Big Brother scheme, boys, many of whom had been brought up in children's homes or orphanges, were encouraged to move to the Antipodes to provide farm and factory labour for the fast expanding post-war Australian economy.
