Temperatures will be hot, hot, hot when Strictly Come Dancing’s Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova bring their Latin Fever show to Glasgow.

The husband and wife will be treating the audience at the Royal Concert Hall to a Saturday night “world tour” of steamy, sexy dances.

Darren, 32, and Lilia, 31, are taking their own show on tour for the first time and it will feature an explosion of Brazilian rhythms from the Rio Carnival, before moving to the sultry clubs of Buenos Aires to be seduced by the passion and intensity of tango.

Cuba then beckons with the cheeky cha-cha-cha and rumba and then it is time to boogie to the American dance halls of the 1930s for the swing and jitterbug.

Finally, the passion, aggression and drama of the Spanish bull ring are brought to life in the glorious paso doble.

The dazzling world of Latin American dance will see the couple joined by four Latin American dancing duos.

Darren and Lillia are in the final runthroughs before their opening night on Saturday in Brighton and Lilia says: “The audience can expect a full-on dance show for two hours non-stop.”

A colourful, carnival atmosphere will be brought to life in the show. Those who watch the BBC’s Strictly series may have seen some of the dances before, but the tour has allowed the dancers to expand their repertoire.

Darren says: “We didn’t just want numbers of two and three minutes, we wanted to explore where those dances originate from.

“There is narrative to all the big numbers we do and some of the sections are about 15 minutes. It is very theatrically based and there is a story behind everything we do.”

It is the first time they have taken Latin Fever on tour after a successful run last year in London’s West End.

Glasgow audiences are so enthusiastic. They are always on their feet and very much up for a good night

After this weekend’s opener the show moves to Darren’s home city of Sheffield, and then other venues before heading to Glasgow.

Lilia says there is an huge buzz around the show going on tour.

“We were petrified when we opened last year and I had never been more nervous in my life. It is our show, our choreography, and I designed all the costumes and we have selected the music,” she says.

“We have dancers and a fantastic band and singers, but it is all based on our ideas so it a lot of pressure – but we enjoy that and love working under pressure.”

Coming back to Glasgow is also a great thrill because they have been to the city many times with the Strictly Come Dancing Live tour.

Russian Lilia, who started ice skating and ballet at the age of four and went on to win the Moscow championship in figure skating two years later, says: “Glasgow audiences are the best. They really are so enthusiastic.

“They are always on their feet. Sometimes we would walk on and not even do anything and they are already clapping. They are very much up for a good night.”

Darren was still an amateur dancer working as a shoe company sales manager in 1997 when, thanks to twin brother Dale, he met Lilia.

Dale knew his brother was on the lookout for a new partner and introduced him to Lilia. It took just 15 minutes for them to realise how good they were together. Five months later, they won the International and British Youth Championships.

They married two years later and turned professional in 2003. They are now regarded as one of the UK’s finest Latin American dance couples.

Both have enjoyed success on the Strictly Come Dancing series. Darren and Lilia have won five trophies with celebrity partners.

While Lilia’s partnership with twice Grand National winner Richard Dunwoody fell at the second hurdle in last year’s Strictly, it has opened up a new opportunity for her.

“After dancing with Richard last year, he introduced me to horse riding and it has been fantastic,” she says. “I enjoy it very much. It’s a great hobby to have – you can just go outside with the horses and turn your mobile off. It’s brilliant.”
