More than 5600 entries have been received for this year’s women’s 10K – that’s 1000 up on the 2009 event as runners try to get their entry in before the early bird discount period comes to an end.

Organiser Culture and Sport Glasgow is delighted with the numbers for the May 9 event, of which the Evening Times is media partner.

Up until March 19, it costs £19 to enter – a saving of up to £7.

If you are looking for a way to ease yourself gently into the full 10K, why not do Glasgow Running Network’s 5K on March 28 in Bellahouston Park?

Our Face Of The Race duo, Natalie Foy and Angela McQueen, who were chosen from hundreds to promote the Women’s 10K on billboards and posters across the city, have already signed up to run the Network 5K – which must be proof their training is already going well!

“I feel I am in the swing of it now,” says Natalie, 33, of Lambhill, who has a four-year-old son, Max. “I have been running mainly in the gym when Max is at nursery and sometimes I drop him off, leave the car there and jog home. Then I jog back to pick him up.

“I did a three-mile run the other day and that pleased me. I feel I am getting somewhere.”

Natalie, who works for Direct Line Insurance, and her friends and family are running as Team Nancy, in memory of her mother who was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 at the age of 47. She died seven years later.

“It was a real shock to us all when my mum was diagnosed with cancer because she was never ill,” says Natalie.

“I’m doing the run for her and to raise money for the Marie Curie Big Build Appeal.

I have raised about £200 so far, mostly through my Just Giving website.

“The 5K at Bellahouston will be a good test of how the training is going – I am looking forward to it.”

Nursery nurse Angela McQueen, 46, from Gourock, has lost 3st 6lb over the course of a year, and the mother-of-five, who is also a carer for her mother, wants to stay trim and healthy.

“I feel great now my training is properly under way. I run every chance I get,” she says.

“Being on billboards and posters all over Glasgow has been hilarious – my friends keep telling me where they have spotted me, from inside glossy mags to on the back of a bus!

“But lots of people have come up and told me they are proud of me, which is lovely.”

STRIDE OUT FOR FUN AND RAISE CASH FOR THE BEATSON PEBBLE APPEAL

Glasgow University’s fourth annual 5K and 10K Run For Fun event is on Saturday, March 20 at Garscube Sports Complex on Maryhill Road.

This year, the Beatson Pebble Appeal, which is backed by the Evening Times, will benefit from sponsorship raised by the event, which starts at 11am.

The appeal aims to raise £10million to help build a translational research centre in Glasgow, which will help to turn scientific discoveries into treatments for cancer patients.

The Run For Fun events have already raised more than £10,000 for good causes, including Yorkhill Hospital For Sick Children and numbers have increased from 50 in the first year to more than 200 in 2009. Organisers are hoping for more this year.
