So why not take your inspiration from Scottish Ballet's The Nutcracker and opt for the 1920s?

Set during the Weimar Republic in Germany, designs for The Nutcracker, which is showing at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow, until December 29, are inspired by the vibrant and rich colours of the German Expressionist painters of the era.

The costumes are bold, fashionable and chic and include jewel coloured suits and dropped waist dresses topped off with stunning accessories.

There are tutus and glitter and pointe shoes, and while this is a world inspired by the origins of the story set in the forests of Saxony and Bavaria, it is one draped in 1920s glamour but merged with a magical backdrop of sparkling snowflakes, an army of Suffragette-styled mice and the eccentric children's godfather Drosselmeyer, dressed in elegant blue feathers.

Emulate the look on a high street budget by opting for show stopping dresses, stand-out head bands and fascinators and gorgeous box clutch bags.

The stores in the city's Buchanan Galleries, including Joy, River Island and Accessorize, are brimming with 1920s inspired pieces so think of details such as beading, sparkles and feather to bring a slice of The Nutcracker into your wardrobe.
