IN OUR OPINION: Children need space to play and to grow

CHILDREN should be seen and heard, running, jumping, laughing and playing in parks and playgrounds across the country.

The availability of space for children to be free to play and exercise their bodies and their imaginations has diminished greatly over the last few decades.

The associated problems are plain to see with a growing obesity issue and many children denied the independence of mind that outdoor play without constant parental supervision allows.

The petition by Play Scotland deserves support as it aims to ensure local authorities provide and protect play areas for children at a time when green space is being targeted by developers and parks are under pressure from budget cuts.

Any moves that encourages children to play outdoors safely will help with targets to reduce obesity and improve health.

Children, inspired by the success of the Olympics must be allowed the opportunity for spontaneous sport with friends as well as investment in organsied clubs and facilities.

Getting children up from the sofa and away from the TV and computer screen more often will benefit us all by helping to create a healthier and happier next generation.

The petition received support from MSPs ... let us hope they are not just playing games.
