LETTERS – Call time on MPs' bar

WHY should I be so shocked to read (Evening Times, February 11) that councillors are tucking into subsidised meals at the restaurant in the City Chambers.

After all, the powers that be in the House of Lords/Commons have all the same perks and even more, and all at the tax-payers' expense.

Isn't it about time all this was stopped?

Everyone else is having to tighten their belts and cut their spending, so why shouldn't our elected representatives pay full whack for their own meals?

One of the first things to go should be the subsidised, late opening bar at Westminster.

Do you think that will ever happen?

I HAVE just read about the plan to upgrade some train stations in Glasgow in time for next year's Commonwealth Games.

I fear that they are going to have to do a lot more than that if we're to cope with the expected upsurge in travellers to and from the Games.

I go to Celtic Park every other week, travelling there and back by bus from the city centre, and can tell you that it can be a nightmare.

After the match I catch a bus from Parkhead Cross, heading into the city. The traffic is usually so badly congested it can easily take an hour for the bus to travel the relatively short distance from the Cross to the Forge Retail Park.

It can take me two hours to get home to the north of the city.

I fear the tourists arriving for the Games would be better being allocated with running shoes rather than bus or train timetables.

YOU would think Glasgow City Council would clean up the litter stuck in the basement gullies and alleys that run along next to the City Chambers.

In addition, it would be good to have litter wardens on patrol, issuing fines, as there are loads of cigarette ends outside the main entrance of this prestigious tourist attraction on George Square.
