LETTERS – Police tactics pay off

I must applaud Strathclyde Police for all the good work they are doing in Maryhill (Evening Times, yesterday).

It's good to know that they are arresting more people for anti-social behaviour, even although the figures themselves were quite shocking.

For too long Maryhill has felt like a no-go area but I believe things are really starting to look up.

I've lived in the area for about 10 years and I've noticed there are far more police walking around. I don't think you can underestimate how reassuring that is, particularly if you are female.

There have been a lot of changes in the area, not least the renovation of Maryhill Burgh Halls, which are a tremendous asset for the area.

Let's hope it is the start of a brighter future for the area.

THE behaviour of the Serbian fans towards the black players in the England team was an absolute disgrace.

If Uefa does not come down on them like a tonne of bricks they will have no credibility and the anti-racism campaigns will have been set back years.

When Old Firm fans are allegedly involved in singing songs considered unacceptable, Uefa always seem quick enough to get involved.

JUST back from the beautiful historic city of Barcelona – jings, I thought the graffiti in Glasgow city centre was bad but Bacelona's walls, doors and even windows seem to be covered in horrible scrawl.

What a despicable act of vandalism which detracts from the look of the city.

I wish vandals would direct their energy elsewhere and make their mark on life and not senselessly on a wall.

THE state of St Vincent Street this week was a disgrace after a burst water main was flowing for five days (Wednesday).

Congestion is bad enough without this adding to it.
