POINTS OF VIEW: Store will bring jobs

So it looks as though Asda has won the battle to build a store in Larkhall, (April 11).

While having nothing against Tesco, I think Asda’s plan will be better for the area by providing much-needed jobs and housing.

While Tesco’s help for the local football club and bowling club would have been welcomed too, in these times, jobs and housing have to take priority. It’s just the same old tripe they trot out whenever there is an election on the horizon. We shouldn’t believe a word they say. Most British politicians would make good comedians. It would no doubt run at a loss, with the inevitable public bail-out. It will never take you exactly where you want to go. For that you need a taxi. How many taxis could be subsidised over the years by the considerable investment required for this white elephant? A McMillan, Kirkintilloch Profits lost? I see Glasgow University has sold its IT firm Kelvin Connect (April 12) -- and it certainly needs the cash at the moment. But couldn’t it have kept it to provide profits to invest in future? It seems like a successful firm which could provide a source of income for years to come. I hope it isn’t a short-term fix at the expense of long-term gain.
