Castle Street in Glasgow has seen many changes over the years since it was first laid out around 1100.
Seen here in 1967, at its junction with Alexandra Parade, it is one of the oldest thoroughfares in the city.
Motorists had three options when they came to the junction – straight on for the city centre, left for The South or right to Kirkintilloch.
It was the route from the Cathedral to the Bishop’s Palace or Castle, which was used for either purpose depending on the demands of war or religion.
The castle, recaptured from the English by William Wallace in 1296, was finally demolished in 1789, to make way for Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
In 1967, the area was in turmoil once again, as tenements were cleared to make way for the Townhead Interchange on the M8 – known as the Glasgow Ring Road.
