The first glimpse of sunshine brought families swarming to Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens in the spring of 1950.
Even though they were well wrapped up against the cold, parents with prams, children on bikes joined elegantly dressed West Enders eager to get out in the fresh air to see if they could spot the bobbing heads of the first snowdrops or the golden glow of daffodils.
Judging by how well turned out they are, we would guess this picture was taken on a Sunday, once families had been to church.
And after a morning sitting quietly on the pews of nearby places of worship, the kids – and adults – would have been eager to let off some steam.
The wee girls on the right – almost three of them one trike – certainly seem to have plenty of gossip to swap before they are called home for lunch and the long-ticking Sabbath hours before they can return to school on Monday.
