THIS aerial view of the Clyde, George V Bridge, Central Station Bridge, the now-vanished Caledonian Railway Bridge and the Jamaica Street, or Glasgow, Bridge just goes to prove how much the arrival of the railways shaped our city.

Look in the top right corner and you'll also see the massive bulk of the old St Enoch Hotel and Railway Station.

The Caledonian Railway used to terminate south of the river at Bridge Street Station, the rear of which can still be seen as you head out of Central Station. Then, in 1878, they extended their lines across the Clyde.

As Central Station expanded, Bridge Street Station became redundant. It eventually closed in 1905.

Today, only the inscribed granite piers of the Caledonian Bridge remain visible, the tracks and girders having been removed in 1966-1967.
