Shouts of encouragement from the riverbank would no doubt have helped to keep this lone rower motivated on the River Clyde.
He was left to do all the hard work while a group of spectators enjoyed the sun on Glasgow Green in 1987.
It looks like a perfect day to sit back and watch as rowing clubs took part in an eagerly-contested regatta.
Deckchairs, travel rugs and picnic tables were the order of the day as spectators turned the banks of the Clyde into a Scottish version of the Henley Royal Regatta – minus the stripey blazers and straw boaters.
No doubt the sight of spectators enjoying a picnic at the side of the river would have made the rowers want to go even faster in order to join the diners.
