Govan's Elder Park was like a fair in August 1936.

One blink of sun and every spare inch of grass was claimed by mums with weans.

While the wee ones paddled in the pond, built castles in the sandpit and generally made whoopee with their pals, the mums could enjoy a good natter, or a good moan about their menfolk.

With money tight, and very few families able to afford day trips, Glasgow's parks provided perfect spaces to relax and let off steam.

What's more, with so many locals making good use of the parks, heaven help any wee nyaffs who thought they could get away with vandalising the place.

Elder Park itself was bequeathed to the people of Govan in 1885 by Mrs Isabella Elder as monument to her shipbuilder husband, John Elder. Statues of the couple still stand in the park today.
