Massey’s Corner, at the gushet of Glasgow’s Great Western Road and Maryhill Road at St George’s Cross, was a local landmark for generations of Glaswegians.
The grocery chain of Alexander Massey was one of four major independent suppliers which kept Glasgow fed and watered at the time, the others being Lipton’s, Cochrane’s and Galbraith’s, with each vying to provide the best boiled hams, the finest teas and the tastiest tattie scones to discerning customers.
And Massey’s weren’t the first to spot the opportunity that the corner site offered. In the early 1930s the building had been home to Ross’s dairy.
Sadly, with the arrival of the M8 nearby this corner of the city was almost cut off from its neighbouring areas and where once pedestrians nipped out for a pint and milk and tipped their hat to the neighbours, today cars race back and forth and you risk life and limb crossing the road.
