You've got to wonder about the navigation skills of the skippers of this flotilla of fishing boats.

What in heaven's name lured them off the Clyde and up the Forth and Clyde Canal to tie up at Dobbie's Loan in Cowcaddens?

The answer is engines, and in particular the propulsion units pioneered by Walter Bergius at his canalside factory.

Bergius began his career in building cars in 1904 in Finnieston Street, Glasgow. His first car, the Kelvin, was not a commercial success. However, its engine proved to be an excellent in the water.

The boats pictured could have called in to be fitted with one of the firm's new Kelvin diesel engines, which were in production from 1931 to 1974.

In 2000 the Bergius-Kelvin Co. Ltd was purchased by British Polar Engines and engine production was moved to Helen Street in Govan.
