MEMORIES: ‘Madman’s dream’ is now legendary lager

In today’s trip down memory lane we go back to 1976.

Bing Crosby was on the bell in 1976 when he filmed an advert for Tennent’s Lager. The crooner was a regular visitor to Scotland and while performing always took the chance to play a round or two of golf.

The Glasgow-based brewer, Tennent Caledonian, is going back to its beginnings for its latest TV advertising campaign. In the year that its lager celebrates its 125th anniversary, the story of how Hugh Tennent brought it to the country has been transformed into a 60-second television and cinema advert. Set in 1885, it shows Tennent set out on his dream of producing lager in Scotland with a cynical media -- including the Evening Times’ sister paper, The Glasgow Herald -- dubbing his plans "a madman’s dream".
