A man stands checking the train times at a deserted St Enoch Station in 1963.

The station didn’t last much longer after this picture was taken.

It was closed in 1966 as part of the rationalisation of the railway system.

The station opened its doors in 1876, with the St Enoch Hotel following in 1879.

It was a large station with 12 platforms and two impressive semi-cylindrical glass/iron roofed train sheds.

St Enoch Station was the first major public building in Glasgow lit by electricity

The St Enoch Hotel, which fronted the station, was eventually demolished in 1977, with the whole area being cleared to make way for the St Enoch Shopping Centre. The centre itself recently underwent a major revamp, with big name stores including Hamley’s moving in.
