OPINION: City on the hunt for more big games

GLASGOW is now in a great position to win its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

The city by then will have seen the benefits and learned lessons from London 2012 Olympics and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games two years later.

Being able to bid for the Youth Games is possible because the city will have a tangible legacy from the bigger events.

The benefit of hosting the 2014 games means there will be ready made facilities and venues to host other top-class competitions.

It also means there is a once in a lifetime opportunity to inspire a generation of young people who will want to take part in these events and many will be able to work towards that as an ultimate goal, but many others keen to take part and be the best they can be.

The fact the bid is to be driven by young people and not just officials in suits will show the potential there is in Glasgow at an organisational and motivational level as well as sporting.

Already, some benefits of Glasgow 2014 can be seen, with the Commonwealth Apprentice Programme and links between city schools and other countries.

The 2014 Games has always been about much more than 10 days of sport and a successful bid to host the Youth Olympics will be another fitting legacy for Glasgow.
