OPINION – East End firm keeps on rolling forward

IN an age when sports equipment is dominated by a handful of international brand names it is heartening to know that Glasgow is home to a market leader.

The fact that it has been a family run business for more than two centuries, providing jobs for local people in the process, makes the success story even more heartwarming.

While the gyms and playing fields of Glasgow maybe awash with the logos of the big brands endorsed by global superstars, bowling greens across the world are graced by Taylor Bowls made from start to finish at the factory in the East End of Glasgow.

The firm's continued success, with only one change of hands since 1796 years, is proof that a well managed business can be successful by delivering what the customer wants and keeping pace with new technology.

In two years time bowls will be one of the sports featured at the Commonwealth Games, and while the events may be staged at Kelvingrove in the West End, the East End firm will undoubtedly have a major presence on the greens.

Taylor Bowls is a success exporting around the world thanks to the hard working staff and careful management down through the years, and they should be a model for all aspiring entrepreneurs.
