OPINION: Glasgow stages a heroes' welcome

TODAY Glasgow hosts a homecoming parade, the likes of which we have never seen in the city before.

The Olympic and Paralympic athletes who represented their country and contributed to the most successful Games for Team GB ever have rightly received a fantastic welcome wherever they have been seen.

The games cemented the reputations of some established stars like Andy Murray and Sir Chris Hoy and brought to our attention the stars of the future like Glasgow swimmer, Michael Jamieson.

Today they will get the reception they undoubtedly deserve and while the Glasgow parade may not match the numbers who turned out to greet the full GB team in London, we will certainly match the enthusiasm.

Today is all about the success in London, but also about inspiring a new generation and Glasgow will have one eye on the Commonwealth Games in two years time.

Again on a smaller scale than London 2012 but the dedication of those striving to make the Scotland team will be the same and the effort of the 2014 organising team every bit as diligent.

So while we look forward to our own event in 2014, lets take one day to celebrate and congratulate the stars of the London Olympics.

Well done to every team member.
