WELL done to the senior pupils at Springburn Academy who saw the school's figures on smoking and decided to do something about it.

All to often many folk think of young people and smoking in terms of a problem, of being difficult to reach and a group who need to be targeted.

However, this particular group are the ones taking the action and reaching out, not only to their friends and classmates, but their teachers and parents.

The figures on smoking for all ages are improving with more people attempting to quit and accessing smoking cessation services as we witnessed following the Evening Times successful, award-winning Clear The Air campaign.

People are also more health conscious and looking to take more exercise as we witnessed during the Glas-Goals campaign.

However, in Glasgow and in some parts of the city more than others, there remains major health problems which are partly attributable to smoking.

The fight continues, on an individual level with people attempting to quit, on a city wide level with council and health board initiatives aimed at reducing smoking rates.

And with young people like those at Springburn Academy on our side it is one we can win.
