Together with the now long-demolished Hutchie blocks in Gorbals, the tall towers were the most famous of the city's high-rise housing era.

For many years Red Road has not been a desirable place to live and the homes had deteriorated to the extent they were no longer fit for tenants in the city.

The scheme today is a far cry from the opening when families were delighted with their new home in the sky with kitchen and bathroom and enough bedrooms for the children.

The demolition once it is complete will offer the chance for a renewal, with space for new homes in a community designed for the 21st century, similar to what is taking shape across the city.

While the blowdown will be a spectacular event and attract interest it is, more importantly, another stage in the project taken forward by Glasgow Housing Association to improve social housing and communities across the city.

For some it may be good riddance, for others a fond farewell, either way the face of housing in Glasgow is changing for the better.

The demolition of Red Road is not about what is going, but what will replace it.
