OPINION: Milestone on road to better Glasgow

WHEN Glasgow began its housing stock transfer more than 10 years ago it was a long-term project to transform social housing in the city.

There is still a long way to go and many people remain in need of better accommodation, but the progress across the city has been remarkable.

The development at Duke Street includes the 1000th GHA new build, providing modern homes as well as the tens of thousands that have been upgraded inside and out.

The years of neglect and lack of investment pre-stock transfer meant so much of what was transferred was unsuitable for habitation and few lived in the homes through choice.

Now, across Glasgow communities are being given a new lease of life as old, unfit for purpose homes are still being demolished making way for new housing that people actually want to live in.

However, it takes more than bricks and mortar to make a community and efforts are also being made by GHA to tackle anti-social behaviour and help people with education and jobs in an effort to ensure the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

Glasgow has had many false dawns with housing before, but this time we can be more confident of getting it right as social housing is in far better shape now than it was 10 years ago.
