Thousands of smokers are trying to quit with many making repeated attempts, such is the hold the addiction has and the difficulty of kicking the habit.
Those still addicted know well that legislation limits where they can smoke and many complain about how few places there are remaining where they can legitimately smoke.
However, few could argue with the children in Yorkhill Hospital who are asking smokers not to smoke outside their hospital.
Smoking outside hospital is banned, but not legally enforceable in the way the ban on smoking inside public places is.
That does not make it a ban that can just be ignored.
Smoking directly outside hospitals is far from acceptable and especially outside a children's hospital where the smoke is then wafting up to be breathed in by young patients with cancer.
Glasgow is making great strides in its attempts to be smoke-free and as our campaign shows smokers are making huge efforts to quit and need all the encouragement they can get.
Meantime, for those smoking, spare a thought for those around you breathing your dirty fumes.
