OPINION – Time to act on organ donations is now...

THE LibDems' backing of the Evening Times' Opt For Life campaign is further proof that most people are in favour of a change in organ donation law.

Willie Rennie's party's support follows Labour's backing last month for a move that we firmly believe will save lives and give families back their future.

Following our own survey and a motion in the Scottish Parliament, we also know the majority of SNP backbench MSPs are also in favour of the change. Deputy First Minister and former Heath secretary, Nicola Sturgeon is also known to be sympathetic.

Our petition attracted thousands of signatures and is currently awaiting consideration of the Petitions Committee of the Scottish Parliament, and medical and nursing opinion has been right behind the campaign from day one.

The momentum is growing and there has never been a better time for the Scottish Government to recognise the benefits and take the first steps to change the law.

This is a policy which will stop people dying as they wait for a suitable donor, while still protecting the rights of those who do not wish to take part.

The public voice is growing louder and the majority of MSPs back a change, so now is the time for the Scottish Parliament to Opt For Life.
