News that the Scottish Government is prepared to fund Fastlink to the east and west of the city centre is welcome.

It is not, however, a substitute for the Airport Rail Link and does not detract from the huge error ministers made in scrapping that.

But, if delivered properly it can be an important piece of transport infrastructure.

The plan is still very short on detail on routes and costs and a business case must be produced quickly to get this moving.

The public need to be assured this is a dedicated, exclusive and effective route that will be quick, comfortable and affordable, and not just a glorified bus lane. Anything less is short changing the tax payer and fare paying passengers.

Council right to force repairs

Disputes over essential repairs to tenement style properties can leave some people living in unacceptable conditions.

Where owners are refusing to sanction work it is right that they can be forced to take responsibility and pay their share.

Leaving repairs undone creates more problems in the long term with even higher bills.

It is about time action was taken to protect responsible homeowners.
