War against gang violence can be won

The significant drop in youth crime reports is good news for those in communities who have long suffered from the actions of local gangs.

Glasgow and the west of Scotland still has a high level of youth disorder, but the drop from 50,000 incidents to 10,000 can only be regarded as extremely good progress.

Much effort has gone into policing to help bring about this reduction, with a more visible presence and better engagement with communities. Targeted campaigns at times of the year, and in locations, which are hotspots for gang violence have helped, as have programmes to provide alternatives to gang culture, engaging with those at risk of following a life of crime. The figures are good news also for young people who might finally see an end to pointless long-running territorial disputes. While people in the areas still suffering from violence, vandalism and anti-social behaviour, will want to see even more efforts and more resources spent on tackling gangs, the figures show a move in the right direction. What is essential is that, especially in times of economic hardship where crime can rise and young people become disillusioned, the resources which have been successfully targeted in this area must be protected.
