"WE have a fantastic Victorian heritage that we seem intent on destroying," writes W.

McDonald (Letters, April 25).

Glasgow almost lost most of its architecturally important buildings. Robert Bruce, the City Engineer and Master of Works, "proposed to demolish almost everything in the city centre and rebuild from new" – circa 1950. He proposed the demolition of Kelvingrove Art Gallery, the School of Art, Glasgow Central Station, the City Chambers, Royal Infirmary et al.

Thankfully, he was blocked and his brainchild, "The Bruce Report", was rejected.

Little too late

Rupert Murdoch says he sorry he didn't close the News of the World earlier than he did.

I'm sure he wasn't sorry when he was laughing all the way to the bank.

The problem is that he blames senior figures in the company for a cover up.

I don't know what's worse: running a company where phone-hacking goes on, or not knowing what senior members of your own company are getting up to.

Either way, it shows he's not fit to run a newspaper and should be standing down himself.

Great garden

CONGRATULATIONS to Douglas Rogan and Rosemary O'Donnell on winning the Silver Spade award (Evening Times, April 27).

I regularly walk past their Kirklee Hotel and the garden is always a delight, a real local landmark.

I only wish more West Enders took as much pride in their gardens. It would make the whole area a lot brighter.

Deck the Halls

HAVINg had a sneak preview of the revamped Maryhill Burgh Halls, I urge everyone to go along and have a look at the transformation. It's jaw-dropping.

Here's hoping, as you say, that they can go on to serve the community for the next 130 years.
