Union Street and Jamaica Street seem to be deteriorating by the week and looking badly rundown, especially at the junction with Argyle Street.

So much investment has gone into Buchanan Street in recent years that other areas have suffered through a lack of investment.

Visitors to the city emerging from Central Station into either Union or Hope Streets must wonder about the hype they have heard about the city.

Don't axe staff

I HOPE Glasgow City Council's review of the brilliant special needs Hazelwood School in Dumbreck won't lead to a fall in staff levels.

My nine-year-old granddaughter attends there and head teacher Monica McGeever and her wonderful staff are working wonders with her.

This wonderful school needs to be kept firing on all cylinders.

Cheers to ban

I SEE some people are up-in-arms about the drink ban on night trains.

Why should they be? There have been hundreds of drink-related incidents on ScotRail trains.

Its time to call a halt on the irresponsible minority who spoil journeys for the majority.

It's the right move. Just ask rail staff.

Too powerful

REGARDING your articles on Ravenscraig closing down and after reading the second part in Monday's Times – don't these people realise they were the masters of their own fate.

How is any company meant to operate at a profit with all the stoppages?

I used to go into these places with my late father in the 70s. They were all the same – Albion Motors, Chrysler.

Maggie Thatcher overstepped the mark but most of what she did was needed.
