This year’s women’s 10K is already a record breaker – thanks to a little help from our Glas-goals campaign!
The event has attracted more entries in the first month after the official launch than ever before, with 3600 runners already signed up.
That’s almost 1000 more than this time last year and organisers Culture and Sport Glasgow reckon Glas-goals can take some of the credit.
Councillor Anne McTaggart, spokesperson for CSG, said; “The Evening Times Glas-goals initiative has already inspired thousands of Glaswegians to make 2010 the year they get active. Deciding to do the Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10K is an excellent goal.
“The success of our recent Face of the Race campaign, championed by the Evening Times, has also helped to boost numbers.
“In sharing their stories our ‘faces’ have clearly struck a chord with women across the country in similar situations who have been seeking a focus. And as this amazing response to the campaign highlights, a great number of women have identified with Angela, Pippa, Natalie and Kirsty – and responded by accepting the 10K challenge.”
The four women who front this year’s Why 10K? promotion were chosen from hundreds of applicants. Together they represent some of the reasons why women of all ages, backgrounds and abilities sign up for the race.
Nursery nurse, carer and mother of five Angela McQueen, 46, is hoping the run will encourage her to maintain a healthy lifestyle; seasoned runner Pippa Gardner, 37, taking part in her 15th consecutive women’s 10K, wants to achieve a personal best; Natalie Foy, 33, wants to raise money for Marie Curie’s Big Build Appeal in memory of her mum; while Kirsty Allan, 26, simply loves running.
This year’s run takes place on May 9 in Bellahouston Park, and you can enter online at www.runglasgow.org. The website also provides information

Gear up for a challenge
Looking for a way to ease yourself into the women’s 10K? Or do you simply want to set yourself a Glas-goals challenge for 2010?
The Glasgow Running Network’s annual 5K Fun Run – which is open to men and women – takes place on March 28 in Bellahouston Park.
Around 500 runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities are expected to take part.
Race organiser, Louise Morgan, a physical and outdoor activities officer with Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: “Like many of the activities and events in the Glas-goals campaign the emphasis is on fun, the run part is optional.
“If you’ve accepted the Glas-goals challenge to make 2010 the year you adopt a healthier approach to life, our 5K Fun Run is the perfect goal to aim for. With one month to go, the distance is achievable. Whether you sprint or scramble over the finish line, you’ll be delighted you’ve made it and taken the first step to becoming more active.
“Let’s face it, by March we’ve all had enough of dark nights and hiding away from the cold – everyone will be craving some fresh air.”
The 5K Fun Run is open to everyone aged 15 and over.
Entry costs from £9 (£7 for Glasgow Running Network and Glasgow Club members). This includes a T-shirt and medal for all finishers, prizes, refreshments and entertainment along the way. For more details, call 0141 287 5079 or visit www.runglasgow.org
