String musicians take a bow

YOUNG musicians impressed the judges in the latest round of competitions at the Glasgow Music Festival.

And it was the turn of the strings to take centre stage at the festival yesterday.

Liam Johnson came first in the Violas Solos Open category, while in the Cello Solos Open, first prize went to Alwin Bucher.

As well as instrumental competitions, the festival features singing, drama, Scottish country dancing and speech.

More than 7000 young performers are taking part in the two-week event at six venues across the city.

The Festival, which will have daily coverage in the Evening Times, will culminate in the The Last Night Concert, when the major trophies will be awarded.
