Funky accessories designer Louise Kenny has her sights set high for her debut collection of hand-printed hosiery – to have them featured on hit US series Ugly Betty.
The 23-year-old from Bishopbriggs thinks the tartan-inspired patterns on her tights and leggings would fit well with the colourful ensembles of actress America Ferrera.
Louise said: “Ugly Betty is quite wacky and likes all her mismatched patterns and textiles.
“I’m always thinking ‘aim high’ – and Americans are quite obsessed with tartan.”
The fashion business has become a family affair for Louise, who hand-prints the 80 denier tights and fashions the jersey cotton leggings in the spare room of her grandmother’s home.
Part-time stylist Louise began the collection around 12 months ago as she neared the end of a four-year degree in Fashion Business at Caledonian University. Having graduated with a first-class honours, she was hand-picked to exhibit her work in the week-long design showcase Caledonian Creates last June.
Her designs are sold under her nickname-inspired label Loula Creates, and prices range from £39 to £119. Female pop duo Mini Viva – behind single Left My Heart In Tokyo – have already raved about them, while Louise plans to send samples to Fearne Cotton, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
The eye-catching colours and psychedelic prints are the perfect pick-me-up for anyone bored by humdrum hosiery.
Louise adds: “I’ve got a bit of a tights fetish – I love to wear tights in bright colours so I love designing them myself.”
