Talented photography students will show off their best work at an exhibition at Motherwell College tonight.
The pictures on show have all been taken for the college’s HNC photography course and will take pride of place in the new Ravenscraig campus’ Internet cafe for the next year.
As well as stunning landscapes, still life shots and portraits, the show will also feature a series of pictures taking a closer look at the flamboyant style of pop star Lady Gaga.
One of the students whose work will be on display is 29-year-old Paul Griffin.
His portrait of fellow student David Young sporting a red mohawk haircut will be on show.
Paul said: “I’ll have three of my pictures in the exhibition and all of the photography students will have some of their pictures on show.
“There are around 30 of us in total so there will be plenty of images for people to look at and I think the standard is really high.
“It’s a great course here at Motherwell College and because there aren’t huge numbers on the course we get more access to the lecturers and I think that makes for a better learning environment.
“There will be A3 size prints of the pictures for sale so hopefully there will be some interest.
“This is a great chance for us to show our families what we’ve been up to over the last year but it’s also an opportunity for the students to get their names known and maybe sell a few prints.”
It is the first exhibition of its kind that the college has ever held.
Guests will also be able to speak to the students and staff and find out more about what the course can offer.
It is designed to give participants a solid foundation on which to build a photography career or, for amateur snappers, an introduction to the technical and practical aspects of professional photography.
Paul intends to complete his HND and move on to complete a degree in photography.
He said: “I always had an interest in photography but work and life got in the way.
“I moved back up to Scotland after spending time in London and I liked the sound of the one-year course at Motherwell College, to get a taste of what photography was all about.
“It has been a great year and I can’t wait to go on and study further.
“What I’d really like to do is get into music photography, maybe taking pictures for album covers and that kind of thing.
“But at this stage I just want to learn as much as I can and get some experience.”
Other images on display include The Gaga by Adam Coates; The Eyes by Paddy McNee; and Motherwell by Tommy Cochrane.
The exhibition takes place in the first floor Internet cafe at the new Ravenscraig campus at 1 Enterprise Way, Motherwell, between 6.30pm and 9pm tonight.
Entry is free and there will be a buffet and drinks for guests.
