The clock is ticking to tell us about the Northern stars who light up your community.
In the second season of the Glasgow Community Champion Awards campaign, we have already travelled East, West and South to recognise unsung neighbourhood heroes.
So don’t delay – shine the spotlight on the deserving activitists of Maryhill, Kelvin and Canal before tomorrow’s deadline.
We are looking to find extraordinary people and groups living or working around Maryhill, Lambhill, Milton, Summerston, Ruchill, Possilpark, Kelvindale, Kelvinside, Parkhouse and Colston.
Lord Provost Bob Winter said: “I witness daily the generosity, vitality and warmth of the people of Maryhill, and I am proud it is those traits that make them so special.”
Along with our awards partners – Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Glasgow Community Planning Partnership – we want to ensure the most-deserving people are recognised at the forthcoming awards ceremony.
All readers and nominees are invited to help cheer on the North’s battalion of local heroes when we return to Maryhill Community Central Hall at 304 Maryhill Road on February 18.
There will be a chance to mingle over refreshments before the winning trophies and runners-up certificates are handed out across the six categories.
All 60 winners from all the city regions will be invited to the gala final in October, when the overall champs will be honoured.
Workmates are real friends
Leaving school is an uncertain time for any teenager, but one Maryhill project is committed to helping those who need even more assistance through that difficult transition.
Workmates is a support service helping young people with learning difficulties access college courses, work experience placements and vocational training.
Based at East Park Residential School, it opened as an offshoot of the school nine years ago to help pupils with assisted needs, such as autism, sensory impairment, communication issues or physical disabilities, leaving full-time education.
Its six staff are working with 11 people aged 17-25 referred from across Glasgow and Dunbartonshire.
It offers a tailored programme of one-to-one support and encouragement into training to meets their needs.
“It’s individualised,” says resource manager Nicola McCann. “If someone likes cooking, then they can do that, plus we have people at drama classes, dance classes, sports groups and literacy classes.
“It really just depends on what the young people are interested in.”
