THE first people who failed to pay fines for dropping litter have been taken to court.
THE first people who failed to pay fines for dropping litter have been taken to court.
Three people admitted throwing away cigarette butts in the city centre and were fined £90 at Glasgow District Court.
They had all failed to pay initial £50 fines handed out by uniformed litter wardens as part of Glasgow City Council's £4million Clean Glasgow Campaign.
Chloe O'Puama , 19, of Castle Road, Newton Mearns, admitted dropping a used cigarette in Buchanan Street on October 30.
Paulo J Rodrigues, 44, of Topping Gardens, Fraserburgh, admitted the same offence at Gordon Street/Central Station on October 30 and David Kelly, 51, of Kilmartin Place, admitted dropping his cigarette in Buchanan Street on October 21.
Eleven other people failed to turn up for their court hearings - all for dropping cigarette butts - and warrants were issued for their arrest.
They are added to three people who failed to turn up in court for their hearings two weeks ago over the same offence.
The council has repeatedly warned it would prosecute those who didn't pay their litter fines.
Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Our priority with the Clean Glasgow campaign is to reduce littering through education and enforcement.
"When someone ignores the former, it is right that enforcement takes place and that our courts support the majority of Glaswegians who do take a pride in their community by ensuring that debt is paid."
A total of 9041 adults have been handed £50 fines since last March but 1339 have been reported to the procurator fiscal for refusing to pay, with 39 cases due in court this month.
Two hundred pupils were also fined as part of a project where litter wardens patrolled outside Glasgow's 35 secondary schools.
- Warrants were granted for the following, all for dropping cigarettes: Donna McCallum, 20, Robertson Gait, Paisley. Belle Codona, 43, of Swanson Street. Mary Gilon, 41, of Springhill Road. Scott Beattie, 22, of Napiershall Street. Christopher Hayes, 17, of Lincoln Avenue. Kelly McGhee, 22. Kate Nay, 25. Margaret Hunter, 45. Gogo Adkinson, 23, McAslin Court. Malcolm Hutchin, 40, Longstone Road. Jane Gemmell, 34 from Prestwick.
