If the streets could talk, I couldn’t hear them. Bellies were rumbling.

Crime could rest easy for the next couple of hours because Toots was hungry and there was no stopping her.

I’ve been trundling on like the Chattanooga Choo Choo at work and Toots has been flipping her lid - saying she hasn’t been seeing me enough.

So when I told her to put her little black dress and red coat on – her smile could have brightened the city’s darkest alleys.

In high heels that would give Sir Edmund Hillary vertigo, the pace she kept would make the likes of Jesse Owens blush as we made our way to Mezze.

Usually cool and collected Toots hared down Tunnel Street the North Rotunda.

I’m pretty sure the name of that street was named after the vision she had to get up those stairs to the top floor, sat down and fed.

When she’s focused she can knock any task out the park –I’ll give her that.

We were shown to our table boasting a view through grimy windows of the river and a dramatic Glasgow skyline.

Even Glasgow’s weather doesn’t shy from a bust up.

The first of the attentive waiters dealt with our drinks order.

With Toots and I making up a quarter of the joint’s population, service was quick.

The Mediterranean inspired joint, with aqua blue lighting illuminating its crevasses, offered some tantalising cocktails and their Rotunda Royale, although going against my usual high ball or large glass of Merlot, packed a punch and was delicious.

With peepers fixed to scran scan, the food menu was like poring over a card at the races – I could see great potential in every option.

Luckily, the grub is served up in the Tapas style – so we could pick and choose between options of both the surf and turf variety.

We were given the tip-off that six dishes is a good amount for a party of two. Being a special occasion we were willing to play ball with that.

After weighing up the pros and cons of the situation we decided to pick what we thought would be the best options to deliver a varied spread of dishes.

On the walls were quotes from some wise guy philosophers from ancient Greece.

‘There’s no harm in repeating a good thing’ was written in blue cursive.

It came across as a challenge rather than a piece of advice.

Speaking of wise men, one told me ‘if it’s Med you’re eatin’, lamb takes some beatin’.

So with that philosophical quip in mind two lamb dishes were ordered up in the form of chops and souvlaki.

They didn’t disappoint. The lamb was so tasty it was criminal. Tender and well spiced, Toots and I were having our own separate love affairs with the dishes.

From the sea, we ordered grilled sardines and calamari. The sardines came whole and were garnished well with herbs. A squeeze of lemon over the top brought it all together.

The calamari was Toot’s choice. I’m not the fussiest eater but given the choice I would have backed a different plate.

But the outsider was also a winner, with the squid meat more tender than chewy and coming with a nice little sauce.

An odds on favourite was the halloumi fries which were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle.

A nice Greek salad completed the spread.

Still peckish after the main event, it was a decision led by Toots to eye up the dessert menu.

We ordered a hunk of chocolate cake which nearly broke the table when the waiter put it down.

A cynic when it comes to ordering desserts at restaurants I usually hedge my bets and steer clear of ordering, but I was happy to take advantage of the good vibes and make the exception.

The chocolatey creation was a home-run and the pleasant warmth after a good meal was beaming from Toots’ face.

Smiling like it was going out of fashion we walked back out in to the big bad world with Plato’s words coming across as a good-hearted boast.

“Be seeing you again,” I muttered.
