LUXURY hotel chain Malmaison has launched a new range of afternoon teas that are refreshingly different.

If you are a little bored of the customary tuna and cucumber sandwiches, their classic Afternoon Tea offers savoury delights including mini burgers (in our case the vegetarian variety) and hot smoked salmon wraps.

The sweet selection is also a break from the norm and includes strawberry and vanilla pavlova, salted chocolate brownies, a lemon and polenta cake, a rhubarb and custard trifle, and a strawberry milkshake.

The scones are minature, and are served last on a separate tray, but after devouring a trillion other calories, that's no bad thing.

We are told by the waiter that only one other guest has managed to eat the lot but we are up to the task. The smaller portions help and it's nice to have room to try everything on the tray.

The food is served with a choice of speciality teas and well worth the £17.50 price tag. We opted for an additional glass of Prosecco to wash it all down.

The experience is all the more indulgent because of the lovely hotel surroundings, which are a perfect oasis of calm in Glasgow on a Saturday afternoon.

Malmaison also offers a a Champagne Afternoon Tea from £25pp or Mumm Rose Champagne £27mm.
