It was the place families across the nation would head to at the weekend for a right good scran - and now it looks set to make a big comeback.

Wimpy burger bars look like they’ll be crash landing back into a high street near you, the chain has said.

The very first Wimpy bar opened in London in 1954 after which it went on to enjoy massive success throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s.

However, the mass arrival of McDonald’s in 1974 had a big effect on the chain, causing it to all but disappear; from around 500 outlets to just 80.

Glasgow Times:

So far, in Scotland, there are only two: one in Kilmarnock and another in Motherwell.

All we know so far is that Wimpy could be making a comeback “early in 2018.”

A Wimpy spokeswoman told Daily Star Online: “We do have some exciting new plans in terms of continued expansion and an investment programme.”

Another added: “We do have many exciting plans under development behind the scenes.

“But these won’t be for public consumption for until February - May 2018.”

Peter Martin, vice president of the food and drink consultancy firm CGA, told The Sun: “If they were to do it, I’d be surprised.

“I think it’s a very difficult market for them to come back into.

“It’s always very difficult bringing back old brands – nostalgia only works with old people.”
