A GLASGOW pub is committed to helping those with mental health issues by kick-starting a unique initiative.

For every dish of macaroni and cheese sold at The Admiral bar on Waterloo Street, a 50p donation will be made to the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH).

Other businesses around the city - including Platform, Bloc+, Finsbay, Dirty Duchess, Julie’s Kopitiam and Piece - are also taking part.

The subject of mental health has been high on the agenda in Scotland over recent weeks, and co-owner of The Admiral, Marc Ferrier, described the extent to which the problem is growing.

He said: “Hundreds of seemingly happy young men come to The Admiral every week, but stats tell us at least one in three will suffer from a mental health problem in their lifetime.

“They also tell us suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in Scotland.

“That’s backed up by our own personal experience. Everyone we know has dealt with mental health issues in some form, either personally or through family and friends.

“We need to change things. And now, more than ever, people want to help.

“With the World Cup and the prospect of a busy pub coming up, we knew we had an opportunity to bring lots of people together to do something.

“So, we came up with the idea ‘Mind Over Macca’. Every dish of macaroni cheese we sell over the course of the competition will see a 50p donation made to SAMH.

“By eating the ultimate comfort food, we want to help give comfort to those who need it now.”

Mind over Macca starts at The Admiral and the other city businesses from June 14 until July 15.
