A SCOTS football star has died after a horrific road accident.

Gordon Lennon, the 26-year-old captain of Dumbarton FC, died following a crash at Brahan, near Dingwall, in Easter Ross.

Tributes today poured in for Gordon, whose girlfriend Kelly gave birth to their son Kai in January.

The accident happened at 4.40pm yesterday and Gordon was rushed to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

But despite efforts by paramedics to revive him he died in hospital.

The death of the star, who was originally from Larne in Northern Ireland, comes after celebrations last month when Dumbarton FC lifted the Third Division trophy.

He had also signed a new contract with the club and was looking forward to a new season.

Many fans today left messages of condolence on the club website.

One said: "He was one of the most friendly, enthusiastic, positive guys you could ever meet. It's totally unfair. His kid can't be more than a few months old."

Dumbarton manager Jim Chapman said: "Everyone is in deep shock after this tragedy and all our thoughts go out to Gordon's partner Kelly, son Kai and his family.

"Gordon had such a zest for life and he was such an intelligent and helpful young man, and one who I counted as a close friend.

"I had known him since he was a kid at Albion Rovers and watched him mature into our captain and the man who led us to the Third Division championship."

Last month Gordon said he was "in dream land" after his side's league title 3-1 win at Galabank Stadium. He joined the team for an open-top bus ride, where hundreds of fans greeted them.

Gordon admitted had been overwhelmed by the change in Dumbarton's fortunes, with a run of seven wins in eight games to take the title.

He said: "I cannot believe it."
