Forecast fine as Weather gives Ton lift

MORTON gaffer Jim McInally has described the Ton's 2-0 win over Gretna as a big boost in his side's pre-season build-up.

Goals from Peter Weatherson and trialist Adam Coakley secured an impressive victory for the Greenock side in their first run out of the pre-season. Macca said: "To say that it was a decent performance is probably an understatement. "Considering this was Gretna's fourth game in their build-up, and that they are now an SPL team who will be looking to consolidate that status, I was very pleased with our display. "But there were a number of promising individual performances and none more so than from Adam Coakley who played as a trialist. He took his goal well and he will travel with us to England at the weekend for our two games there. "We also played Davie McGregor in midfield and he did very well and it could be that is an option for us." However, there was a major blow for the Ton as midfielder Scott McLaughlin broke a wrist and will be out for up to two months. Meanwhile, Queen's Park notched the second victory of their German tour with a 2-1 victory over Division Four side Gunnigfeld. Strikes from Tony Quinn and an Alan Trouten penalty helped overturn a one-goal deficit. And a delighted Stark said: "This was quite a significant step up from our opening game against Eppendorf and the boys responded to that challenge. "I was very pleased for big Tony Quinn getting on the scoresheet again and the signs are he can be a big player for us in the Second Division this season. "We also went with Robert Dunn and Stevie Canning up front and they are showing potential as a partnership." Elsewhere, Raith Rovers surprised Kilmarnock 2-1 at Stark's Park and Falkirk defeated Millwall 1-0 at the Falkirk Stadium. Tonight Hamilton Accies will host Airdrie with boss Billy Reid looking forward to the friendly derby. He said: "This will havea bit of an edge so we will have to hit the ground running. The boys have put in a lot of hard work and everybody is desperate to get a run out. "It's now up to the players who feature to lay down a marker for the rest of the pre- season programme." St Mirren will kick-off their two-game Irish tour when they meet Northern Irish Premier League side Newry City.
